Serial numbers are a key tool in authenticating luxury goods from brands like Louis Vuitton (LV) and Dior. While neither brand makes it easy, knowing what to look for can give you confidence in your purchase.
Louis Vuitton (LV) Date Codes
Louis Vuitton does not use serial numbers in the traditional sense. Instead, they use date codes that represent the week/year and location of production.
Format:
- Pre-1980s: No codes
- 1980s–2021: A mix of letters and numbers (e.g. SD2067)
- 2 letters = factory code (location)
- 4 numbers = production date
- 2 letters = factory code (location)
Example:
- SD2067 = Made in France (SD) during the 26th week of 2007
Note:
- Before 2007: Numbers indicated month and year
- From 2007–2021: Numbers indicate week and year
- After 2021: LV phased out date codes and introduced microchips for authentication
Location: Usually embossed into leather tabs inside the bag or along the seams.
Dior Serial Numbers
Dior bags feature a more traditional serial number embossed on a leather tag.
Format:
- A series of numbers and letters (often 2–3 lines)
- No universal format, but consistent within certain collections
Example:
- “MA-0190”
- MA = Factory location (e.g., Italy)
- 0190 = Made in January 1990
- MA = Factory location (e.g., Italy)
Location: Inside the bag, on a leather tag—typically near a zipper or pocket
